As most of you know, two of Perth’s best MC’s & one DJ (Omac, Complete & DJ L-Street) are currently touring around the country supporting one of hip hops biggest names, Kerser. Here is a little example of them tearing apart a place other then there home town!

Much respect to all three dudes!

Cortext, a Veteran in the Perth Hip Hop scene, launched his first ever & highly anticipated solo mixtape Saturday 5th of January at the Rosemount Hotel, of of Perth’s best hip hop venues. As people began to flock in early the atmosphere was incredibly positive, as the guys from Oxfam’s, Close The Gap campaign were there with wrist bands, temporary tattoo’s & a petition that, from what I can gather, got more than a few signatures from the local hip hop community. As the two wooden doors the main room swung opened, we were welcomed by the sounds of some classic 90’s hip hop by SMA member, DJ Jamu. From Salt N Peppa to 2pac, as soon as people entered the door they were moving to the sound of nostalgia, Jamu even managed to find time to fit in a sneaky juggle, watching Jamu behind the decks is like watching a magician perform, magic!

Terra & Fluent opened the performances with a huge stage presence & hard beats, a mix of heavy raw vocal tones & great cuts (once again Jamu bought his A-Game!) made for one hell of an opening! With the two Perth natives taking it in turns to provide excellent support and reminding us exactly why we were here, for someone who had never seen either of the MC’s live, I would gladly pay money to see both dudes again!

Following these two was another Perth Vet, Bryte MC. He took the stage with a cheeky smile & humours mood, quiet a coincidence when Charlie Chimp, the cheekiest monkey in hip hop, was behind him on the one’s & two’s! The combination of the two legends made for quiet a set, with a mix of heavy bangers & emotional lyric ballads, the crowd was with him the whole way through. Keeping with the cheeky theme, a massive highlight of the night was Bryte’s performances of Chainsaw Dick & Big Bootie Bitches. The entire crowd was laughing, something one doesn’t usually see at a hip hop gig

Recently we have been treated with songs from the next pack of MC’s to take to the stage, the Street LIFE Descendants! A great collective of MC’s who, unfortunately, were short a couple of members, but were still eager to show us exactly what they were made of. With names like Xzakt, Dista, Beni Baja, Chile Chilz, Bitter B & Victorian MC Dribbles, you know that these guys are going to be something special. Performing together for the first time & with so many strong names in the line-up, SLD brought a new meaning to stage presence, the high energy set may have gotten a bit chaotic, with so many members, 5 mics & a small stage, collisions were inevitable, but all MC’s managed to brush past it and continue on with an incredible set that had me seeking for more!

Next up was the finest women in Perth Hip Hop, Posah Laine, one of Syllabolix combines Queens (shared with Layla of course) had a little surprise as her set was being remixed, LIVE, by Dazastah! With a ever so amazing voice & live drumming from the Chimp I was feeling the amazing vibes, not only was Daz tapping away at a snare drum like MPC-esq machine, but he was also spitting, AT THE SAME TIME! This lead to one of my favourite sets of the night!

Finally, after an incredible night of performances, it was time for the man of the hour, Cortext, and his hype-man, Lethal, to take the stage & rip the roof of the place, which, by the sound of the bass on the first track, Gotta Know, he was about to do just that. It is blatantly obvious that Cortext has been doing this for a long time, he is probably one of the most comfortable MC’s I’ve ever seen on stage & Lethal managed to fit right in to that slot providing entertaining antidotes & ad-lips throughout  the set. Cortext send messages to everyone from the Police to Coles with a big “f**k you” to majority of the government! I can honestly say, it is a privilege to see Cortext performing such an outstanding mixtape, having spoken to him both before & after the gig, I could tell he was very happy with his performance. Cortext provided us with exactly what I expected, real hip hop, none of this sell-out stuff, REAL DAMN HIP HOP.

I know it’s early, but this will be one tough show to top.

Shout outs to Oxfam & everybody involved!

So last night I was fortunate enough to catch our home-town hero, Omac & one of the biggest names in the local scene, the stage prancer, Bitter B, take HQ and bring it back to hip hop!

Getting there early, being my first underage gig, I was a little hesitant to see how the crowd would react, but, with DJ L-Street providing banging tunes for the begging of the night, they were all well behaved.

The first act to take the stage was a young dude by the name of Tonite, for those of you who haven’t heard of him, he also helped Drapht open the Perth Arena late last year, a pretty big feat for a dude under the age of 18! I can honestly say, I was very impressed with Tonite, providing his fans & friends with quick rhymes & dope beats, for his second show, he had managed to build a great stage presence & I could tell, personally, he is very passionate about his music. Tonite is part of the M. V Team, a crew I had not yet heard of until Friday night, but from what I saw, these dudes are a clique to keep an eye on!

Do yourself a favour and check out his music & Facebook page by clicking the links!

After a short break, we got right back into the swing of things with the stage being taken by Simple Complexities, fronted by MC’s Stan & Shadow. I was keen to see this set as I had yet seen Stane (AKA MC Black/Brown Beard!) perform. RIght away I could tell these dude’s had a strong fan base and loved being up on that stage, with incredible breath control & dope rhymes they definently had me searching for their Facebook page this morning.

Make sure you check it out Simple Complexities Facebook & Music pages

Defekt was up next and did a combined set with his brother Sever. As soon as Defekt took the stage the underage crowd went nuts, its obvious his is loved by fans from all different age brackets, he had everybody’s hands up through-out majority of his set, this, combined with Cuts from Mr. Rob Shaker & Sever performing tracks off his Hooligan Lagoon mixtape, made for my favourite set of the night! The highlight of the night was the performance of Batter Up! Every person in that crowd was screaming Batter Up! at the top of their lungs!

Next up was D.S.C, as usual, these lads killed it! It was good to see Cortext (who is launching his mixtape tonight at Rosemount, 7pm! GET THERE EARLY, THIS WILL SELL OUT!) & Aero D one last time before Aero leaves us for his home town of Denmark. With Jamu on the decks & the two MC’s providing the rhymes from Ill Recognise Ill, I was a very happy man, highlight of the set was easily Analyse, that beat always gets me moving!

Next up was one of the two men we all came to see, Omac, back over from Melbourne to travel the country with Kerser & Complete for the No Rest For The Sickest Tour, could tell he was happy to be performing in Perth again & the All Ages crowd loved him! Joined by Kabs you could tell they were trying to keep their set tame, but still, Omac had that cheeky swagger he is known for, with a very energetic performance (as usual) I am very keen to hear more from Omac!

Finally was Bitter Belief, with Rob Shaker, as usual, the pro got up, did his thing & had that crowd HOOKED, everybody was happy to be there and Bitter was happy to be there, with his Delta Goodrum love song being one of my favourites, the crowd understood his humour and responded the way I expect, with applaud and cheer!

What a great night, my first all ages show, nothing got out of control and everyone was well behaved! Well done to all MC’s

Brother Ali & Sean P Review

Posted: January 2, 2013 in Show Review

First off apologies for the lateness on this one I have been extremely busy working and generally winning life but here it is.

Unfortunately due to work commitments I missed out on seeing ASAPs set which I continue to kick myself in the face for to this day. Dudes got a lot of talent keep an eye out for any of his upcoming projects.
When I first walked into Black Betty’s I was unsure of the venue but my first feelings proved wrong as the sound system was clear and everything was heard clearly.
First act up was the man with the most famous moustache in Perth Creed Birch.
Creed and Sarah Pellicano smashed through an impressive set which definitely makes me want to listen to more of their music.
Highlight of this set for me was Waste the fight also one of my favourite tracks on The Treehouse collective mixtape. Props to Creed and Sarah on a dope as fuck set.

Next up was the man Optamus who needs no introductions.
His band always delivers an awesome show that night was no exception.
Tracks from forever and a day were torn apart and Moondog did a great job on vocals
all in all another dope set from a king (forgive me for rushing theres a lot for me to cover)
set highlight was Im Crazy and Love isnt always on time nothing better than drunkenly singing along to an 80s track crying tears of drunken loneliness)
also shout outs to L-street for manning the DJ Cage!

Sean P was up next.
I enjoy Sean Ps music but something about the first half of his set was off to me it felt like he did not want to be there and was angry. He seemed to perk up towards the end of his set but many in the crowd commented on his lack of enthusiasm to me.
His DJ also seemed to play an extremely loud siren after every few bars P spat.
The last few songs of the set though he came through and tore the mic apart even interacting with the crowd and exchanging words.
Overall I enjoyed his set but the first half bought down what could have been a stellar peformance.

Next was the reason I attended Brother Ali one of my favourite MCs in history.
His voice faltered but he maintained control of the crowd for his whole set.
You could feel that he threw all his soul into his peformance ripping a variety of tracks from all albums highlights being Fajir and Babygirl for me.
Ali cemented his spot as one of my top MCs with an amazing set I will not forget anytime soon.

Shouts to Launch for a dope night.
